Bert is a Dutch clinician trained in the Netherlands. After finishing his medical degree at Utrecht University in 2012 he began his postgraduate training with the Dutch specialty program “Doctor in International Health and Tropical Medicine", a program that trains doctors to work in low resource settings around the world. Bert’s main interests are in maternal health and tropical infectious diseases. Bert was trained in obstetrics in the St. Elisabeth Hospital, Curacao, in the Caribean region. During his stay in this region, the American continent suffered an outbreak of Chikungunya virus infection, which can, like ZIKA virus, be harmful for the newborn.
Millions of women around the world suffer from a lack of adequate reproductive health care for safe motherhood in combination with being exposed to tropical infectious diseases. Bert's work focuses on the provision of obstetric and reproductive health and in 2016 he joined the Maternal and Child Health team at SMRU. He is currently participating in different research projects and helping with the training and supervision of local staff.
